Some frequently asked questions about our grant application procedure

1. Who does Hilton in the Community Foundation give money to?
The Foundation makes grants to a wide range of charities which meet one of our chosen areas of focus:

  • Young People – Education
  • Young People – Health
  • Disaster Relief and International Fund

2. Are there any exceptions?
A full list of exceptions can be found in the Foundation's Grant Guidelines. The Foundation will not provide funding for:

  • General donations to a charity’s running costs – applications must relate to a specific project
  • Individuals
  • Sponsorship or fundraising activities
  • Organisations registered outside the United Kingdom (except in the case of Disaster Relief)
  • Organisations that are not registered with the Charity Commission

    Full cost recovery policy
The Foundation generally prefers not to fund salary/administration costs. However in recognition of the charity sector move towards full cost recovery in order to fund the true costs of supporting young people, the Trustees have agreed to a Full Cost Recovery policy which will allow up to a maximum of 15% of administration /overheads to be awarded in connection to a project. This policy will be applied on a case by case basis.

3. How do I apply for funding?
Applications for funding must be received by email as well as in writing. A copy of the charity's latest annual report must be submitted together with the proposal. Please refer to our application form and guidelines.

4. How will I know if my application has been successful?

Once the hard copy of your application has been received and logged, you will receive an acknowledgement to the email address you have provided. We will endeavour to keep you updated with the outcome or next steps of your application as quickly as possible.

5. What is the Grants Committee?
The Grants Committee comprises Independent and Hilton-nominated members, representing the UK and Ireland. With meetings held on a quarterly basis, the Grants Committee discuss applications for funding in detail to decide whether a proposal will receive a grant.

6. If I meet all the criteria will I receive a grant?
We regret that even if you meet all the criteria on the application form you may still not be successful as the Foundation’s limited grant fund is over-subscribed. It is worth noting that the Grants Committee is charged with ensuring that every £1 and €1 donation is given effectively and has the maximum impact possible therefore applications are compared.

7. How much money can we request?
There is no limit on the amount of money that a charity can request. However the Foundation is a small charity and therefore is restricted to grants between £1,000 and £30,000 per annum (approximately). Our average sized grants and other giving statistics are provided in the Grant Guidelines.

8. Are there any conditions on the grant?
Yes. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions section on the Application Form. By signing and submitting your application you are agreeing to the Foundation’s Terms and Conditions.

9. Where should I send my application?
Completed applications should be sent to the Foundation office in hard copy and email format.
