Small Change Big Difference

Every child has potential, no matter what their ability. By participating in the Small Change Big Difference campaign generous guests are helping to raise funds to support vulnerable young people in your community by choosing to give €1 or £1 when they stay with Hilton.

Small Change, Big Difference is an initiative of Hilton in the Community Foundation. Registered charity no. 1084220 ( England and Wales) 38995 ( Scotland). This campaign is subject to national laws and taxes and all net funds raised will support a variety of charities supporting vulnerable young people. Hilton Worldwide funds the Foundation’s core costs, meaning that every net Euro or pound donated will go to the charities we support. The only deduction is for the printing and distribution of the materials, no administration or staff costs are charged to the campaign.

This year, the campaign will run for three months, from October 1st to December 31st 2012. To facilitate your donation, €1 or £1 will be automatically shown on your draft hotel bill. This donation is optional and we understand that some guests will prefer not to participate. The optional €1 or £1 can be easily removed by advising Reception at check-out.

Since 2004 thanks to everybody’s support, over €1.2 million / £1 million has been raised for many great causes including: Save the Children, Barretstown, Ovidiu Rom, Barnardos, The Children’s Society, Piros Orr Bohócdoktorok Alapítvány, Chance for Children, Licht ins Dunkel and many more.

All funds in the UK go towards the Foundation's Central grant fund. Money will be distributed to charities working with vulnerable young people during the coming months as applications are received. Please see our list of past grantees for examples of the work we will potentially support.

Case Study

Below are a selection of case studies from the UK which have benefited from HCF's previous central grants.

Tony, 11, is severely autistic and has the mental ability of a two year old. Locked in his own world, Tony needs routine and constant supervision. He shows challenging behaviour if the family undertakes activities other people may take for granted, like going to the cinema or shopping.

In the holidays, Tony attends a special play-scheme funded by the Foundation, where he receives one-to-one support tailored to his specific needs.

Lainey, Tony’s mother says: “Tony loves the summer scheme. He looks forward to it every day and has tremendous fun doing all the various activities. It’s great to see him so happy and enjoying life as he should be.”

Eight year old Rosie is a bright and chatty little girl. She has cerebral palsy, which affects her ability to walk and control her movements. Since receiving Conductive Education and special therapy from the age of four, she is now walking with sticks and has just started to take some steps alone.

Rosie’s greater independence has really helped her to be involved in new activities and she can now often be heard to say: “I don’t need any help, I can do it myself!”

Lewis has severe cerebral palsy and is unable to sit, walk or talk, although he has an excellent understanding of everything going on around him. Through a dedicated adaptive snowsport school in Scotland, Lewis was able to experience skiing for the first time. Lewis’ father says “Lewis thoroughly enjoyed himself and it brought tremendous joy to us as parents seeing him so happy and participating in a sport which we thought would never be possible for him to do”.

William is 5 years old and has autism. For William and his family, everyday situations such as going to the shops, visiting friends or going on holiday frequently become exhausting, isolating and even depressing experiences. That was before William was paired up with Percy, a black Labrador, to create the first recognised ‘autism’ assistance dog team in the UK. In three months, the changes are more than the family could have hoped for. Back at school, William’s teachers have noticed that his communication and walking skills have improved.
