Barnardo's – giving children a better start in life

Barnardo's is the UK's leading children's charity (Registered Charity No. 216250) and the largest provider of direct services to children in the country. They have over 350 local community projects directly helping more than 140,000 children and young people each year, working with the most vulnerable children so they can have a better start in life and therefore the prospect of a better future.

Barnardo's believes that education is pivotal to a young person's life chances, opening opportunities for further education, training and employment. The benefits of education also cascade to the next generation. The big difference campaign will help give children the chance of a better future with the opportunity to work towards NVQ qualifications.

Dr B's Restaurant and Coffee Shop, Harrogate, is a restaurant, coffee shop and outside catering business that provides a real work environment for young people to train and work. They have real customers who expect and receive a high standard of catering – as confirmed in the reviews by The Daily Telegraph and The Times!

The young people involved in the project all work towards NVQ qualifications in Food Preparation & Catering or Food Service, whilst receiving additional support from staff to enable them to overcome their personal circumstances or special learning needs. The aim is to empower them to find a part in the community where they can make a worthwhile contribution.

Money raised from the big difference campaign will be used to cover the cost of new equipment, furniture and educational requirements to train the students at Dr B's. For those wishing to see for themselves Dr B's Restaurant and Coffee Shop please call 01423 884819 or just pop in to 13-15 Knaresborough, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG2 7SR or www.barnardos.org.uk

Teenage Cancer Trust

Each day in the UK, six teenagers will find out they have cancer. These young people often get a raw deal, receiving hospital treatment in inappropriate facilities alongside children or older people.

Teenage Cancer Trust (Registered Charity No. 1062559) focuses on the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer by providing specialist teenage Units in NHS hospitals. The Units are colourful and vibrant, equipped with computers, TVs, game consoles, kitchens – to avoid hospital food and are staffed with professionals able to fully understand the needs of the patients.

TCT has built 8 Units to date. The concentration of medical expertise within these units can improve chances of recovery by 15%. Units cost approximately £1 million each to build.

The £1 donation will be used to purchase the necessary technology, which enables a young person to access web, television and audiovisual facilities through hand-held controls and wall-mounted flat screens. This technology costs between £100,000-£200,000 per unit and will enable these young people to communicate with each other from TCT units, their homes, schools and universities. This will ensure they can continue their education and take exams whilst undergoing treatment.
