In response to the severe flooding that has affected more than 20 million people in Pakistan and killed at least 1,600, the Trustees of the Hilton in the Community Foundation have made a donation of £50,000 to support UNICEF's relief efforts.

Heavy monsoon rains during the second half of July have caused floods of enormous scale. More rains are expected. All five provinces of the country have been affected but the north-west province, Khyber Pukhtoonkhawa, has so far seen the worst devastation. Nationwide, serious damage has been caused to public infrastructure, including power stations, hospitals, water irrigation systems, drinking water, sanitation facilities, communication networks, and more than 400 schools. There is urgent need for funds to sustain the ongoing relief effort and plan for early recovery interventions. Shelter, clean water, sanitation, food, and medicine are key issues. UNICEF has advised that diarrhoea is the biggest risk facing children, while cholera and measles is other big concerns.

The Foundation's grant will support UNICEF's Water and sanitation programmes so that clean water can be provided to children and their families. The programme also provides purification tablets and rehydration salts to help combat the effects of diarrhoea. Here are just a few of the items they are providing:
